The
 summer (Aug. 15) meridional
 overturning
 circulation is graphed for
 six
 HYCOM simulations as a function
 of
 latitude and density. The five
 simulations
 without relaxation BC’s
 are
 very similar to each other.
 Relaxation
 BC’s clearly enhance the
 meridional
 overturning circulation and
 induces
 a deep circulation cell
 associated
 with the northward flow
 of
 bottom water. A significant seasonal
 cycle
exists at low latitudes, with a
 reverse
 circulation cell evident
 south
of 10N in all simulations with no
 relaxation
 BC’s. This leads to
 significant
 upwelling at upper and
 middle
 depths near 10N. The tendency
 for
flow reversal is evident in the BC
 case,
but it does not overcome the
 enhanced
 overturning cell. The
 upwelling
at 10N is confined to the
 upper
 ocean.
