Grid point STMW represents the Subtropical Mode Water formation region at the northern edge of the subtropical gyre. Velocity profiles differ substantially within the mixed layer because hybrid coordinates with KPP mixing resolves the ageostrophic wind-driven flow (Ekman spiral).
