README to access the history files of the 1/12 degree North Atlantic simulation 1) The upper layer fields (SSH, T, S, U, V, Mixed layer depth) can be read and plotted as ppm files using imageppm.f or as contours using check.movie.f These files are saved once a day for the whole domain and can be found on the mass storage (msas1) in the directory Czulema/movie4/movie as 0001,0001.yy.ddd.gz where yy is the year and ddd the day. The units are in meters for SSH (if divided by 98060 as in program), degree Celsius for T, part per thousand for S, cm/s for U and V, mixed layer depth in meters (if divided by 98060 as in program) 2) The history files containing the 3-dimensional fields are saved every 3 days tar files in Czulema/histtar4 as hist.yy.ddd.tar The tar files have to be untared (tar -xvf), cd hist.yy.ddd, and then processed with cvtmpp to produce usable history files as: cvtmpp -a -n 128 -P 1,1,1437,1437 * to obtain the history file over the whole domain or cvtmpp -a -n 128 -P ia,ja,ib,jb * to obtain a portion from ia to ib, ja to jb. cc cvtmpp.c -o cvtmpp gives you the cvtmpp executable. n is the number of processors, presently 128. Some of the full history files have already been composed and can be seen in Czulema/history4/history/full The variables are c Fields dumped once: c ubavg in cm/s (barotropic u velocity) c vbavg " ( " v " ) c pbavg surface pressure c montg Montgomery potential (layer 1) c thmix Mixed layer density (sigma_theta) c c Fields dumped at every layer (16 layers) c First k loop c u in cm/s (baroclinic u velocity) c v " ( " v " ) c dp in meters if divided by 98060 (layer thckness) c temp in degree c saln in ppt c Second k loop c subduc To obtain the velocities for each layer utotal= u + ubavg To obtain the sea surface height ssh = pbavg + montg (in meters if divided by 98060) P.S> The velocities u and v are oriented in the -y and x directions respectively (rotation of 90 degree from the traditional x,y as in a matrix). Take some times to get used to.
